It is undoubtedly necessary to listen to children’s voices and opinions when it comes to playground design since children are the real users of playgrounds.

The Junior Playground Commissioner Incubation Programme @Tuen Mun

In order to encourage child participation in the playground design, the Junior Playground Commissioner Incubation Programme @Tuen Mun was launched in 2016-17. The participants included 17 junior secondary students from Hong Chi Morninghope School, Tuen Mun and Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School.

During the 14 months of the programme, students learnt about inclusive play concepts, joined experiential play in playgrounds and attended idea creation workshops. After they expressed their views about a sensory wall and floor patterns at the water play area through paintings and models, they explained their thoughts and exchanged views with the Architectural Services Department.

Finally, their ideas were adopted by the Architectural Services Department. As the children’s views were put into reality and views of the “little neighbours” were incorporated in the playground, children have truly participated in building a playground that belongs to them.

Junior Playground Planner

Based on the previous project, we have started a two-year project, “Junior Playground Planner”, together with the Mission Covenant Church Holm Glad No.2 Primary School. The project elements include training, experience, children’s perspective and community. We aim at benefiting the primary students, the community and professionals in the sector, by creating an improvement and enhancement to a local play space where children will play, can play and love to play.
